Fernando Alonso led the way during the opening practice session of the Chinese Grand Prix. As the first race with their new Team Principal, Ferrari were just as surprised as we were to see Alonso take the top spot, four tenths clear of the dominant Mercedes of Nico Rosberg who took the second quickest time. He himself was six-tenths quicker than Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo who finished FP1 in third. Jenson Button and Kevin Magnussen were fourth and sixth for McLaren, sandwiching Nico Hulkenberg’s Force India. Jean-Eric Vergne was in seventh for Toro Rosso while title favourite Lewis Hamilton was far down the order in eighth, narrowly ahead of reigning Champion Sebastian Vettel. Felipe Massa rounded out the top ten.

Daniil Kvyat was eleventh for Toro Rosso ahead of Lotus’ Romain Grosjean and Williams reserve driver Felipe Nasr who filled in for Valtteri Bottas this session. Giedo van der Garde was also given a seat with Sauber for the opening session, replacing Adrian Sutil and finishing fourteenth. Sergio Perez, coming from Bahrain where he scored Force India’s second ever podium, was down in fifteenth, while Pastor Maldonado had a bizarre moment at turn 9 where he was looking down at his steering wheel and simply continued to turn right into the corner, not realising his mistake until he was deep into the gravel trap. He corrected and turned left but this caused him to spin back onto the circuit – an embarrassing moment for the Venezuelan whose driving ability has been scrutinised as of late following his equally bizarre crash with Esteban Gutierrez in Bahrain two weeks ago.

Kamui Kobayashi was seventeenth for Caterham, ahead of Sauber’s Gutierrez and the Marussia duo of Jules Bianchi and Max Chilton. Bianchi was in the garage as the team worked on the car for the bulk of the session, but he was back on track for the final seven minutes. Marcus Ericsson was twenty-first for Caterham while Kimi Raikkonen failed to get a run in as the team discovered an issue and retired the car from the session.
