Nico Hulkenberg rejected an offer from Lotus for the remaining races of the season, it has emerged.
Kimi Raikonnen last week announced that he would be forced to miss his final two races with the Enstone team due to back surgery for an injury that has affected him since before the Singapore Grand Prix. This left his seat up for grabs with Lotus Team Principal Eric Boullier confirming that Hulkenberg was an option.
However, Hulkenberg would not leave Sauber prematurely, presumably to keep the team happy should he need to race with them next year.
Previously it had been thought that Lotus’ Quantum sponsorship deal would allow then to hire Hulkenberg over pay-driver Maldonado, but Maldonado’s management remain in talks with Lotus, meaning Hulkenberg could be left at Sauber
It’s expected that Lotus reserve driver Davide Valsecchi will step up for the upcoming American and Brazilian Grand Prix.
