FP1: Ricciardo Top In Soaked Silverstone

Toro Rosso’s Daniel Ricciardo was the top man in this morning’s Free Practice One session at Silverstone. The Australian is currently engaged in a fight for the Red Bull seat alongside World Champion Sebastin Vettel when Mark Webber leaves the team at the end of this year. This result, however, isn’t what it seems with Ricciardo fending off only ten other wet weather runners for P1.

It was an hour and fifteen minutes into the hour and thirty minute session before the first timed lap of the session was set – a two-minute lap from Ricciardo. This prompted several other drivers to take to the track, including local boy Lewis Hamilton who temporarily topped the time sheets, before being robbed of the privilege Ricciardo, Sauber’s Nico Hulkenberg in second and William’s Pastor Maldonado in third.

Fifth, and behind Lewis in fourth, was Sauber’s Esteban Gutierrez who bettered Valtteri Bottas who finished sixth. Jean-Eric Vergne was seventh, 3.6 seconds shy of his team-mate at the top. Giedo van der Garde was eighth for Caterham, followed by the Marussia duo of Max Chilton and Jules Bianchi. Chilton beat his team-mate by merely a tenth of a second at his home event. In eleventh, and last, was Ferrari’s Felipe Massa who was the only man to set a timed lap over two minutes.

In the closing seconds of practice, Charles Pic, who could’ve set a timed lap, slid into the barriers at the last corner to end his session.
