Two drivers have been handed penalties by the stewards in Canada following the Qualifying session on Saturday afternoon.
Lotus’ Kimi Raikkonen and Toro Rosso’s Daniel Ricciardo were deemed to have lined up incorrectly in the pit-lane during the re-start of the Q2 session. Felipe Massa had spun at the braking point into turn 3 and hit a barrier. His stricken Ferrari caused a red flag as the Brazilian climbed from the F138 and lamented his third huge crash in two weeks.
On the re-start, 16 drivers formed a traffic jam three rows wide as they attempted to get a lap in during the remaining 1 minute and 59 seconds of the session. It was decided that Raikkonen and Ricciardo had gained an advantage by parking outside the lined track in the pitlane.
As you can see in the above picture, Raikkonen and Ricciardo are very far right. As a result of the podium, Kimi drops to 10th while Ricciardo starts in 10th. Sergio Perez, Pastor Maldonado and Jean-Eric Vergne who were also under investigation, were eventually found clear.
