Q1: Rosberg Leads The Chaos

Nico Rosberg has topped the first part of Qualifying and what could very well be the only Qualifying session of Saturday. The rain which arrived midway through Practice three determined that Q1 was delayed to 17.30 local time. By the time the green flag was finally flown, a very expensive traffic jam had formed in the pitlane. The cars made their way humbly around the circuit, many afraid to push too hard.

Hamilton who did push paid the price when he spun out of turn 1 on his second lap. The Briton spun around and hit the barrier ever so slightly leaving him beached with minor cosmetic damage on the MGP-04. He wasn’t the only one in trouble – Giedo van der Garde made contact with the wall in T5 and lost his rear wing.

Felipe Massa was next in line to take a spin, loosing his F138 out of turn 12 and hitting the barriers. Luckily for the Brazilian, his Ferrari was somehow relatively undamaged given the force of the shunt, a broken front wing all that needed changing.

Sergio Perez was also in the wars, firstly nearly hitting Fernando Alonso while trying to overtake the Spaniard, then spinning out of turn 12. Fellow Mexican, Esteban Gutierrez became the world’s most expensive lawn mower when he brought his Sauber across the grass.

In the closing minutes, Charles Pic hit water and spun around, hitting the wall in the run up to turn 11 while his older team-mate spun out of turn 11. Esteban Gutierrez was also in trouble, loosing his Sauber in a similar incident to Massa’s spin. He also hit the wall very hard, this time becoming stranded in his car mid-way through the track. Radioing the team to confirm that he was okay, he sat in his car as the rest of the grid filed past him to end the session.
