Vettel Keeps The Bulls Charging In Australia

Sebastian Vettel has finished the first Friday session of 2013 in spectacular fashion, topping the time sheets twice in two sessions. His Aussie team-mate was fifth in the morning session but had jumped to P2 in the afternoon, much to the delight of the local crowds who will very much be hoping that their hero can finally make it to an Aussie podium.

Nico Rosberg took his Mercedes to third fastest while Romain Grojean and Kimi Raikkonen lined up their Lotus’ in fourth and fifth with Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa sandwiching seventh placed man Lewis Hamilton. Adrian Sutil finished his first full day back in F1 with a 9th place, Almost 7-tenths faster than the Sauber of Nico Hulkenberg in 10th.

Jenson Button was off the pace in what is usually the Briton’s lucky circuit, bringing the car home in 11th, a full 2.3 seconds off Vettel’s best lap. Paul di Resta took 12th place while Sergio Perez couldn’t better 13th ahead of Daniel Ricciardo and Esteban Gutierrez in 14th and 15th.

Pastor Maldonado in 16th and Valtteri Bottas in 18th were split by Jean-Eric Vergne who ended the session in 17th. Jules Bianchi once again finished best of the back markers, this time followed by Charles Pic in 20th while Max Chilton dropped to 21st leaving Giedo van der Garde in 22nd and last as per the morning session.

Mercedes, despite the positive results, had a mixed day. Lewis Hamilton went into the grass at turn 9 before soon going straight into the gravel at turn 6 while his team-mate was told he was suffering gearbox issues. A twitch from Webber and a spin for Vergne were the only other out of the ordinary activities as the teams took the chance to run race simulations and test different tire compounds.
