Former Marussia driver Charles Pic will partner up with Giedo van der Garde for the 2013 season.
Caterham’s announcement this afternoon ended weeks of speculation with Petrov, Alguersuari, Glock, Senna, Kobayashi and van der Garde all among the never-ending list of drivers linked with the spare seat. Heikki Kovalainen and Vitaly Petrov, the drivers for the team last season, have both being dropped as Kovalainen refused to pay for a seat while Petrov’s sponsorship dried up.
27 year old Van der Garde will be making his first full F1 appearance, having run six FP1 sessions and several show runs, such as Bavaria City Racing in Dublin last year.
The Dutchman has also tested for Spyker F1 and Force India before winning the Formula Renault 3.5 championship in 2008. He was linked with the Caterham seat last season before Vitaly Petrov secured the seat, mid-way through pre-season testing. With no F1 drive, van der Garde returned to GP2 where he raced with Caterham Racing, finishing the season sixth overall.
This announcement leaves just two seats open for next season, one at Force India and one at Marussia. The latter is expected to be filled by Brazilian Luiz Razia following his website’s update which listed Razia as Marussia’s second driver, although the team have yet to comment on this.
