Former F1 drivers Jaime Alguersuari and Lucas di Grassi will remain as Pirelli’s Formula One test drivers for 2013.
Speculation arose that they could be dropped to make room for Kamui Kobayashi with the tire manufacturer, but today Paul Hembery finally announced that he’d keep the two drivers who would be doing a lot of simulator work in preparation for the 2014 season .
“I read on Twitter that Kobayashi would be unveiled today as a test driver, but he won’t,” He said at Pirelli’s launch in Milan. “There is no reason to change what we have. We have had a great time with Jaime Alguersuari and Lucas di Grassi.”
“We need to renew our contract (with F1) first, and then will look at the tyres and the compounds. There will be a lot more use of simulator, because we have worked extensively on tyre modelling. That is how we will focus on the changes for 2014.”
Alguersuari lost his seat at Toro Rosso in 2011 after three years with the team while Lucas di Grassi has been away from F1 since 2010 when he was given the boot by Virgin.
Pirelli also announced today that Frenchman Jean Alesi is to become a brand ambassador for the company.
