Massa drops 5 places on grid for Gearbox change

Felipe Massa has been dropped 5 places on the grid due to a gearbox penalty.

The Ferrari driver was called to the stewards last night but was let off without a mention of what they were investigating, However, Ferrari have now broken the seal on the gearbox, which means an automatic 5-place penalty, even though they won’t actually change the gearbox. As a result, his team-mate will start on the clean side of the grid.

This is crucial to the championship as Fernando Alonso will be promoted to P7, and the clean side of the grid. This is arguably a strategic move by Ferrari as it will benefit Alonso. It is suggested that starting on the dirty side of the grid will drop a driver by a full two rows with lack of grip.

Romain Grosjean was also penalised yesterday for changing his gearbox between FP3 and Qualifying. He was demoted from 4th to 9th (And will now start 8th).
